- Curator's comments

The illustrations show Kyoto genre scenes by the artist Yamaguchi Soken (1759-1818), a pupil of the great Maruyama Okyo. The title calligraphy by Kien appears to read 'Sporting with the Brush'. (Label copy, TTC 1997)

Hillier and Smith 1980
One of the most admired of black and white books. A second similar series was published in 1804. Yamato here refers to the area of Kyoto and Osaka as contrasted with Edo. The genre style of the former is racier and nearer to reality than the fantasies of the newer city.
