The colophon indicates that Shun'ei was assisted by his master, Shunsho. This is the most imaginative and the best designed and printed of all Japanese books of 'diablerie'. The title is an elaborate play on written characters; the first three can mean 'stories of strange demons' as well as 'once upon a time'.
