- Curator's comments
- By the middle years of the 1780s, the popularity of 'crazy verse' (kyoka) reached a peak, with all classes and professions taking part in public poetry contests. In two anthologies of 1786 and 1787, Kitao Masanobu (aka the author Santo Kyoden) did a series of comic portraits of some of the main participants, parodying the ancient court portraits of poets of classical verse (waka). This is the fist anthology, containing fifty portraits, here the coutesan Utahime (right) and Tsuburi no Hikaru (left) mounted on a pantomime horse carrying a fan of Fuji, in parody of Narihira's exile to the east in 'Tales of Ise'.
