Curator's comments
This may be a portrait of a certain Umegae, who led a novel troupe of female acrobats in a brief run of perfomances at the Shiba Shimmei shrine. After a few months of wild popularity they were arrested for breaking sumptuary laws regarding the use of gold in costumes.(Label copy, TTC, 1998)
