The blade is made with the finest steel with 'itame' grain and an even straight 'hamon' in 'nie' crystals. The quality of the blade, the slight 'uchizori', or inwards curve, and the carvings (a 'ken'-type straight double-edged sword with 'gomabashi' ritual chopsticks on the reverse) are characteristic of the earlier Kamakura period, in which style this blade has been made.
