Curator's comments
Harris 2005 This 'tanto' blade is 'hira zukuri'. The tang has one hole and the file marks are 'kesho' with 'sugikai'. The tang tip is 'kurijiri'. The grain is closely packed 'koitame' with 'nie'. The 'hamon' is 'choji' in 'nie' with many 'ashi' and gentle 'sunagashi' on the 'omote', and more violent 'sunagashi' on the 'ura'. The 'boshi' is 'komaru'. The scabbard is vermilion lacquered with a regular pattern of raised black dots. The gilt copper alloy fittings are roundly sculpted with dragons and 'shishi'. The 'kozuka' is of 'shibuichi' with a tiger carved in sunken relief. The 'fuchi' is signed 'Umetada Narikazu'.
