This blade is 'shinogi zukuri' with a 'mitsumune' and a medium 'kissaki'. There are 'ukibori' carvings of Fudo Myo-o in flames on the 'omote' and lotus petals with Sanskrit characters on the 'ura'. The unmodified tang is curved and has one hole; the file marks are 'kesho' with 'sujigai'. The tang tip is 'kurijiri'. The grain is 'itame' flowing strongly near the cutting edge, with 'jinie'. The 'hamon' is overall 'suguha' with dense 'nie' and 'ashi' throughout, forming rounded 'gunome' resembling 'juzuba' with 'sunagashi'. The 'boshi' is 'komaru' with some 'hakikake'. The carvings are particularly skilful examples of work by Sessai Toshimasa. The blade is in the style of the Masayoshi school.
The scabbard is of black lacquer with designs of clouds in gold 'nashiji' and faintly embossed depictions of paulownia. The long chape, 'fuchi', 'kashira', 'koiguchi', 'kozuka' and' 'wari-kogai' are of 'shibuichi' sculpted with paulownia blossoms, and the 'menuki' are of pheasants and chrysanthemums sculpted in 'shibuichi'. The 'tsuba' is formed half of iron and half of 'shibuichi', with coloured metal inlay motifs of pheasants and chrysanthemums in high relief. The mounting dates from the Meiji era.
