This print, reproduced in black and white in Smith, 1983, no. 92, is an early example of the very effective simplification which Saito began to use about this time, and which ushered in the best period of his work. The influence of Mondrian, whom he greatly admired, shows in his successfully simplified forms, while he has retained an austere palette suitable to the muted tones of Kyoto temple architecture and garden design. He has also made much use of the wood grains of the blocks. The relatively large edition of 150 shows how popular he had already become, mostly with American buyers.
