Scrolls like these were used by travelling bards to illustrate their recitations. The large slab of scarlet for the background, and the agitated way in which the sky is shown in the particular scene of Rama fighting Tataka, point to the survival here, far away both socially and geographically from the painting of the courts, of pre-Islamic painting styles.
