This curved blade is 'hira zukuri', of 'sunnobi tanto' proportions, and has a 'mitsumune'. The unmodified tang has one hole and the file marks are 'kiri'. The tang tip is 'kurijiri'. The grain is prominent 'itame' with 'jinie'. The 'hamon' is shallow 'notare' in 'nie', with much 'sunagashi' and 'kinsuji'. The 'boshi' is 'komaru'.
Shigetaka I worked during the Kan'ei era (1624-44). The shape of the blade and the 'hamon' are similar to the work of Sadamune of Sagami Province, although the 'hada' is coarse in places.
The 'wakizashi' mounting has a black-lacquered scabbard with 'shibuichi' fittings depicting a boy riding an ox beneath the moon. The 'tsuba' has coloured metal inlay of a traveller before pavilions. The 'fuchi' is signed 'Toshinori'.
