- Curator's comments
The great Ebizo (formerly Danjuro V) as Sadanoshin, Shigenoi's father, who realises he must commit suicide to atone for his daughter's misdeeds. The blue of the robe has been revamped in this impression. (Label copy, TTC 1995)
The play is 'The Loved Wife's Parti-Coloured Reins' (see also nos 137, 144-7). The elderly actor had passed on the name of Danjuro to his successor. He plays here a No drama actor who is forced to kill himself because of his daughter's dishonourable liaison. The play was adapted from a Bunraku puppet play, originally by Chikamatsu (1653-1724). The print is signed Painted by Toshusai Sharaku'.
After close comparison with 1906,1220,0.201, possibly a Meiji-era reproduction. (Asano Shugo, 18/3/2009)
