The play is 'The Loved Wife's Parti-Coloured Reins' (see also nos 137, 144-7). The elderly actor had passed on the name of Danjuro to his successor. He plays here a No drama actor who is forced to kill himself because of his daughter's dishonourable liaison. The play was adapted from a Bunraku puppet play, originally by Chikamatsu (1653-1724). The print is signed Painted by Toshusai Sharaku'.
