- Curator's comments
From a group of eleven portraits in the 'aiban' format with yellow backgrounds, issued in the 11th month, 1794. The actor Kinsaku II was sixty-six at the time and had just arrived in Edo from Osaka. (Label copy, TTC 1995)
The female impersonator is shown in the role of Iwate Gozen disguised as Okame, a maid. The play was 'Otokoyama O-Edo no Ishizue', given at the Kiri-za theatre in November 1794. In these 'later' prints Sharaku abandons the mica background and adds a cartouche giving the actors' alternative names. The signature is 'Painted by Sharaku'.
