- [Ichikawa Komazo III drawing a sword and Bando Minosuke with his arms folded]
Sixteen designs are known by Toyokuni showing half-length portraits of pairs of actors with a grey background, published by Yama-Den between the 7th and 11th months, 1796. (Label copy, TTC 1995)
Both these actors appeared together at the Kawarasaki-za and the only plays produced at that theatre during these months were ‘Mitsugimono Shida no irifune’, ‘Hikosan gongen chikai no sukedachi’ (autumn), and ‘Itsukushima yuki no kaomise’ (11th month). IN particular, the ‘Kabuki Nendaiki’ (p.527) states that Komazo’s performance as Kyogoku Takumi and Minosuke’s as Keyamura Rokusuke was very well received, (‘daihyoban nari’).
