- Curator's comments
- According to Professor Iwata Hideyuki, this is possibly a female version of the kabuki play ‘Sukeroku’. The repeating pattern seen on the cloth covering the sake seller’s head and on her apron is the family crest of the actor Ichikawa Komazo III. Therefore, the print may allude to a version of that play staged at the Ichimura-za in the 2nd month, 1793, when Komazo played the role of Sukeroku. (Paul Griffith, 27/11/2009.)
