Pen and ink drawing, accented with watercolour paint on paper of the cenotaph and upper terrace of the Emperor Akbar’s (r.1556-1605) tomb at Sikandra. The painting shows Akbar’s cenotaph in the centre of the terrace, the floor of which is laid with alternating black, white and orange tiles, creating a checkered pattern. Surrounding the terrace is a high wall with alcoves and windows covered by lattice screens. Two domed kiosks rise above the wall on each corner. The terrace is open to the elements and the cenotaph is directly above Akbar’s tomb which is located deep inside the building. A red sandstone staircase is shown in the lower left corner of the painting. The drawing is framed by a thick black line.

- This painting comes from an album of watercolour paintings and pen and ink drawings of North Indian architectural subjects (1945,1013,0.9.1-33). These include the Taj Mahal, Fatehpur Sikri and Sikandra. Albums such as this were commonly made during the early 19th century, typically for European visitors in India. Comparable albums are in the collections of the British Library and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
