Description
Colour woodblock print, oban, from an album of 80 sheets. Series of 46 comic views of Edo and 33 prints of actors. The kabuki actor Bando Hikosaburo V as the sumo wrestler Onigatake Horaemon in the play ‘Sekitori nidai no shobuzuke’ (関取二代勝負付) by Yatami Heishichi, performed at the Nakamura-za from the 23rd of the 9th month of 1861 (Bunkyu 1). The background is signed ‘Gengyo sei’, with artist’s seal. Poem on the left signed ‘Godai Shinsui’ (五代薪水), the actor’s poetry name (‘haimyo’ 俳名).
