- Another impression of this design on the Enpaku online database (no. 006-3007) shows the date seal for the 6th month of 1861 in the lower left margin: 酉六改, ‘tori / roku / aratame’, ‘bird 6, aratame’; also the publisher’s mark in the lower left margin: 田鍵庄, ‘ta, kagi, sho’, which is the mark for Kagiya Shobei; also the carver’s mark: 彫工 小泉兼, ‘Horiko Koizumi Kane’ in the lower right margin.
Nizaemon VIII did not perform the role of Karaki Masaemon in 1861. The production closest in date to the print’s publication is the one given above. However, he also performed the role in the play ‘Motomishi hana bunbu no norikake’ (還結柏政武飾駒) in the 10th month of 1856 at the Morita-za. The most famous play in which this character appears is ‘Igagoe dochu sugoroku’. (P. Griffith 12/2013).
