Curator's comments
A forceful portrait of the founder of the Onoe acting dynasty, Kikugoro I, who specialised in warrior and other serious roles. The inscription is a haiku in praise of the plum by the actor himself.(Label copy, TTC, 1998)
Smith 1988 The Onoe family of actors specialised in military and realistic parts. The poem is signed with the actor's pen-name, 'Baiko'. The print is signed 'Painted by Torii Kiyoshige'.
