Description
Seated figure of the Buddha in bhumisparsa mudra (the gesture of enlightenment) protected by Muchalinda Naga (mythical serpent deity). Made of gilded and lacquered, cast bronze with glass inlays.

Curator's comments
During the sixth week after the Buddha's enlightenment, there was a huge downpour of rain. The naga king Muchalinda wound his coils around the Buddha's body and arched his hood over the Buddha's head to protect him from the rain.
