- The Chinese court beauty in the center is probably Yang Guifei. The Japanese court ladies may be the intuitive and pasionate poet Ono no Komachi (left) and the more socially proper author Murasaki Shikibu (right), both familiar in popular culture. The literary element may relate to the Song origins of the Three Vinegar Tasters (q.v.)
The band around the shoulder contains the numbers for the 30-day months in the lunar year 1766: 1, 3, 5, supplementary 5, 6, 8, 9 and 11. The band around the foot contains the numbers for the 29-day months in the same year: 2, 4, 7, 10 and 12.
Known in three versions, only this one having numbers on the jar, making it the earliest.
