Yatsuhashi (‘Eight-plank bridge’) in Mikawa province became celebrated for its poetic associations after it was featured in the literary classic Tales of Ise in the ad 800s. The site is now in modern Chiryū city, Aichi prefecture. The original eight-plank bridge over the iris pool was already in ruins by the 1000s, but it continued to appear as a subject in the visual and decorative arts. If ‘parody pictures’ (yatsushi-e) of the later Edo period are included, then the total number of such works is enormous. Hokusai surely had these in mind when he drew this print, titling it an ‘old picture’. Nevertheless, he added some distinctive extra flourishes, such as dressing the figures in the fashions of the day and making the centre of the bridge rise and fall.
