A couple returning home from their work in the mountains cross a suspension bridge with no handrail; the man is carrying a load of brushwood on his back and his wife has a small stack on her head. The image evokes conflicting sensations: on the one hand the figures proceed calmly through the deep mountain valley, where geese fly and deer graze; on the other, they seem to inhabit a space far beyond normal reality. The title suggests that there really may have been such a bridge on the border between Hizen and Etchū (or Echizen) provinces. More likely, Hokusai used his imagination to exaggerate the form of a typical suspension bridge, which could surely be found all over Japan at the time.
