A courtesan turns to face the 'kamuro' following her, her body arched to form a perfect curve. Her hair is combed out and hangs loosely down her back, tied together at the ends with a red ribbon, and she wears a purple 'uchikake' over a kimono decorated with maple leaves and (?)clematis scattered over a winding river. The 'kamuro' carries a long stem of peach blossom, perhaps intended to adorn a display in the Yoshiwara quarter for the Dolls' Festival on the third day of the third month.
Within Tsuneyuki's 'oeuvre' this is thought to be an earlier rather than later work, dating from perhaps the middle of the Kyoho era (1716-36) (see Asano Shugo's comments in 'UT', vol. 1 (1987), no. 113), but the face already has the oval shape, long nose and rosebud mouth that are the hallmarks of Tsuneyuki's style. The highly modulated and flowing calligraphic outlines to the drapery lend support to the contention that Tsuneyuki may have studied with the Kano master Tsunenobu.
