- Curator's comments
- Children born to Yoshiwara courtesans might be raised as male servants or apprentice courtesans. The child servants ('kamuro') of courtesans were generally girls aged from about 7 to 13. The earliest designs in the series are thought to be a group of some 11 sheets issued jointly by the publishers Nishimuraya and Tsutaya. The series is highly significant for many reasons:depicting the shift in fashion to the wide 'lantern-locks' hairstyle; the large size of the paper (which became standard); the inclusion of each courtesan's name; and the inclusion of a publisher's mark on each design.
