- Curator's comments
- The newly-constructed Mt. Tempo also had a nickname "Landmark Mountain" (Mejurushi-yama) among sailors. In this, perhaps the most dramatic and successful of Gakutei's single-sheet prints, a ship at full sail heads through a stormy sea towards refuge. The woodblock carved to print the threatening black stormclouds has been deliberately abraded ("ita-bokashi") to give them a jagged edge, and the silver ink has been used to enliven the foaming waves. The bridge in the distance is probably Shohei Bridge, on the south side of the island. Gakutei is also known to have edited an anthology of "haiku" poems on the subject of Mt. Tempo, "Tempozan haikai kushu", published in 1837. (label copy, TTC, 1997)
