A three-volume work in which appropriate pictures and ‘kyoka’ poems are used to illustrate what must have been popular proverbs and sayings of the day. The contents of the preface by Tsuburi Hikaru indicate that it was compiled by Tsutaya Juzaburo. Utamaro's illustrations are mainly genre scenes and they accord well with the ‘kyoka’ poems. The colophon has been reused from ‘Ehon Edo suzume’ with the date cut out, so although no date appears in this colophon, it seems reasonable to assume that the date of publication was the same as the date given in the preface, that is, New Year 1789.
In 1797 an edition was published by the Osaka firms of Akashiya Ihachi and Izumiya Genshichi who had acquired the blocks.

[Main text translated in Japanese below /
