Curator's comments
A subject for Zen ink painting of the medieval period was the 'four sleepers': the three Chinese monks Han Shan (Kanzan), Shi De (Jittoku), Feng Gan (Bukan Hoshi) and a tiger who often accompanied the latter. Here in a 'parody picture' (mitate-e) in the style of Masanobu, a courtesan dozes with the tiger. (Label copy, TTC, 1998)
