This print shows a procession of the Edo (Tokyo) fire service. The presence of a date and a censor's mark indicate that this was an official government commission, since such censorship did not become general until the 1790s. The fire service was set up in 1658 following a major Edo fire. The ten companies depicted in the top row are shown with their dates of foundation, districts, crests, stipends and other details. The print is signed 'The Japanese artist Kondo Kiyonobu'.
