These are from a series of twelve, of which the first two are missing from the British Museum's set. They were probably intended to be made into a handscroll, in which form they survive in other copies. The Korean embassy of 1711 made a big impression, and these pictures of it were printed on the orders of the military government. The Japanese samurai accompanying the Koreans have shaven heads and some carry swords. The missing first sheet is signed 'Picture by the Eastern Japanese artist Okumura Masanobu'. 'Eastern' refers to the city of Edo. This is one of the earliest works of this major 'Ukiyoe' artist and publisher.
