Two slightly different versions of this print attest its popularity at Dunhuang. Both show Mañjuśrī on his lion mount, attended by a lion tamer of marked Western appearance and worshipped by a small boy. The inscription calls him Mañjuśrī from Wutai shan, the mountain in Shanxi province where, as the future Buddha, he would make his earthly abode. The oldest wooden temple buildings in China, built in AD 782 and 897, still stand there.
