- Curator's comments
- There appears to be an earlier edition of this design in which the role name at upper left was given as ‘Osaku’ (おさく) instead of ‘komori’. The print is part of a series of seven, each illustrating one of the roles played by Kumesaburo in this production. The play has always been a great vehicle for an ‘onnagata’ to show off the technique of ‘quick-change’ (‘hayagawari’). The other six roles are Osome, Hisamatsu, the lady-in-waiting Takegawa, Kihei’s wife Oroku, Hisamatsu’s fiancée Omitsu and Osome’s mother Teisho. For the others in the series, see the Enpaku website: http://www.enpaku.waseda.ac.jp/db/enpakunishik/results.php
