- Curator's comments
- This is a view looking down Toricho, one of Edo's main shopping streets, on a summer evening, probably facing south toward Nihonbashi bridge. The long storefront on the right is that of Shirokiya, one of the city's three largest department stores, along with Echigoya (now Mitsukoshi) and Daimaruya (now Daimaru). Around forty years earlier, the print artist Sawa Sekkyo had designed a horizontal 'perspective picture' (uki-e) depicting Shirokiya from a similar vantage point but during the New Year's shopping season (museum registration no. 1908,0616,0.172).
