- Curator's comments
- Although Kinsaku’s pose in the left sheet with both arms lifted to cover the chest is very similar to Sharaku’s yellow-ground ‘aiban’ portrait of Kinsaku in the role of the maid Ebizo Okane in ‘Otokoyama o-Edo no ishizue’, performed at the Kiri-za in the 11th month of 1794 (Kansei 6), it seems that in that particular production Kinsaku and Ebizo did not appear in these roles in the same scenes together. However, a comparison with the 4th scene (四立て目) in the ‘ehon banzuke’ for ‘Nido no kake katsuiro Soga’ does show Ebizo and Kinsaku together in a scene that closely resembles this hosoban diptych. Therefore, the current identification is much more likely. See the exhibition catalogue for 'Toshusai Sharaku - His Art and Age', Tokyo National Museum, p. 283, Tokyo, 2011. (P. Griffith. 8/2012)
