- Information provided by Charles Helwig, Jan. 2022:
The original edition of 'Kenshi gaen', published by Fugetsu Sozaemon, was in either three or four volumes with a separate volume for the prefaces (the 4-volume edition would include the separate volume of fishes, with the title 海錯図, which has a colophon dated 1775, and also might have been published separately). Hishiya Magobei subsequently acquired the blocks, and published editions in two volumes (see 1915,0823,0.220) and three volumes (see 1979,0305,0.126.1-3), containing abridgements to the prefaces, with the former edition excluding the volume of fishes. The date of the earliest Fugetsu edition is unclear, as there is no colophon besides the one in the volume of fishes, and the prefaces to that edition have considerably earlier dates of 1770 and 1771, which might suggest a publication in three volumes before 1775.
