The identification is tentative, and another suggestion is Shizuka, mistress of Yoshitsune in the famous play "Yoshitsune sembon-zakura," which also formed part of the programme on this occasion. (Label copy, TTC 1995)

Tsuneyo appeared in May 1794 at the Kawarasaki-za theatre, Edo (Tokyo) in the play 'The Loved Wife's Parti-Coloured Reins' (see nos 137-8,144). Sharaku's 'early' prints, done in the first few months of his shorter than one-year career, make striking use of dark mica backgrounds to bring all the viewer's attention on to the facial expression. The signature is 'Painted by Toshusai Sharaku'.
