Sagisaka Sanai was sponsor of Yosaku at his coming-of-age ceremony and always has his interests at heart. In the illustrated programme he is shown with a lantern meeting the lovers. (Label copy, TTC 1995)

Bando played the role of Sagisaka Sanai in 'The Loved Wife's Parti-Coloured Reins'. This play must have made a great impression on the emerging print-designer, for he did nine other portraits from this performance. The signature is 'Painted by Toshusai Sharaku'.
