Colour woodblock print, oban. The kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro VII as Oboshi Yuranosuke, dressed in formal ‘kamishimo’ costume and grasping a short sword in one hand; in Act IV, scene 2, ‘Omote mon, shiro akewatshi no ba’ (表門城明け渡しの場, ‘Surrendering the castle at the front gate’) from the play ‘Kanadehon Chushingura’ (仮名手本忠臣蔵), by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Senryu; performed at the Kawarasaki-za in the 9th month of 1815 (Bunka 12).

- Curator's comments
- In addition to the pair of long and short swords (‘daisho’) traditionally carried by samurai, Yuranosuke here grasps the blade with which his lord Enya Hangan committed ‘seppuku’ disembowelment. It is at this point that he vows to himself to avenge his lord’s death. (P. Griffith 8/2012).
