- Curator's comments
- Visitors to the pleasure quarters enjoyed many kinds of improvised entertainment, including games of visual punning (mitate). In this case two servants pose with objects so that their silhouettes resemble a kettle on a range and an upright pot. Part of the fun was the moment when the sliding doors were pulled back to reveal how the shadow was made. Objects related to food and drink were a favourite theme.
