- Momoi Wakasanosuke had planned to kill Ko no Moronao for his insults and for using the Tsurugaoka Hachiman ceremony as an opportunity to pursue Enya Hangan's wife Kaoyo (Act I). Kakogawa Honzo's bribe, however, forces Moronao to apologise to Wakasanosuke for their altercation (end Act I), which in turn forces Wakanosuke to withdraw. Moronao is secretly irate at this humiliation. To vent his anger, he taunts Enya Hanga so fiercely that Hangan draws his sword and attempts to strike Mononao, but Honzo intervenes. Hangan loses the opportunity to exact his own revenge. His retainer Hayano Kanpei has been spending time outside with his beloved Okaru (one of Kaoyo's ladies-in-waiting), and misses the incident. He feels remorse over his neglect of duty but Okaru prevents him from committing suicide and convinces him to flee with her to her family's home.
