Colour woodblock print. Scene from Act I of Chushingura, at Tsurugaoka Hachiman shrine, Kaoyo (wife of Enya Hangan) ascends stairs toward the shogun's younger brother Ashikaga Tadayoshi (seated centre), Ko no Moronao (black robe), Kakogawa Honzo (blue robe, crest of stylized character 'hon'), Enya Hangan (green robe, crest of crossed feathers), and Momoi Wakasanosuke (red robe, crest of four squares), to identify a precious helmet owned by her husband, from among others found on a battlefield, the helmet intended for dedication to the shrine; attendants following with box containing the helmets.

- At the end of this act, Moronao propositions Kaoyo directly, but the disgusted Wakasanosuke intervenes, sending Kaoyo home. Moronao hurls insults at Wakasanosuke for interfering.
