Kintai (‘Brocade Sash’) bridge, with its striking five arched spans, crosses the Nishiki river in Suō province (modern Iwakuni city, Yamaguchi prefecture) in western Japan. The bridge was built in 1673 by order of Kikkawa Hiroyoshi (1621–1679), the third generation samurai lord of the Iwakuni fief. As shown in this print, the three central wooden arches over the river rest on stone pillars, with an arched wooden span at either end. Hokusai surely used local pictures and gazetteers as reference, but even making allowance for this, the depiction of the stone pillars is rather rough. In later printings, the atmospheric slanting rain is omitted.
