A boat bridge is constructed by fixing a line of boats together with planks. They existed in many places, but the boat bridge at Sano in Kōzuke province (modern Takazaki city, Gunma prefecture) was particularly well known. The bridge was made famous in the medieval Noh play Funabashi (Boat Bridge), which in turn took its inspiration from a poem in the ancient Manyōshū collection of the late ad 700s. In creating this scene Hokusai may have been influenced by a poem by Fujiwara no Teika (1162–1241) about a completely different place, the ferry crossing at Sano (modern Shinmiya city, Wakayama prefecture). The large print ‘One hundred bridges at a glance’ (1823, cat. 00) includes at bottom right a similar image of a boat bridge, which Hokusai apparently enlarged to create the present print.
