Compare Hokusai's illustration of the same subject in Hokusai manga, vol. 7 (1817).

This famous waterfall is located near the post-station of Agematsu on the Kiso highway, in Shinano province (modern Nagano prefecture). In volume 7 of Hokusai’s Sketches (Hokusai manga, 1817), Hokusai includes an illustration entitled ‘Ono waterfall, Shinano province’, suggesting he may have actually visited the spot. The view is from the left side of the falls, so the water appears to bubble upwards at the top, before dropping down. Hokusai and his printer have created a fantastical atmosphere by linking the gradated band of black from above the falls to the coil of pale blue clouds rising from below. The gazetteer Famous Places on the Kiso Highway (1805) has an illustration of this waterfall, which allows us to identify the ‘Ono teahouse’, here in the bottom left (Hinohara 2013), and the shrine to Fudō, projecting towards the waterfall in the centre. In the gazetteer, though, it stands to the left of the small bridge.
