- Series: Ichikawa Komazo III 三代目市川高麗蔵 / Yakusha butai no sugata-e 役者舞台之姿絵 (Pictures of Actors on Stage) (Pictures of Actors on the Stage)
Colour woodblock print, oban. The kabuki actor Ichikawa Komazo III in an unidentified role, possibly that of Oyamada Taro, in the play ‘Matsu wa misao onna Kusunoki’ (松貞婦女楠) by Nakamura Jusuke II; performed at the Kawarasaki-za from the 1st of the 11th month of 1794 (Kansei 6). Another possibility is the role of Tokubei in the ‘Kasane izutsu’ (重井筒) scene in the play ‘Butai no hana wakayagi Soga’ (舞台花若栄曽我) by Sakurada Jisuke I; performed at the Kiri-za from the 4th month of 1794 (Kansei 6). From the series ‘Yakusha butai no sugata-e’ (役者舞台之姿絵, ‘Pictures of Actors on Stage’)

- Curator's comments
- Toyokuni's debut series was more than forty designs of single full-length figures of actors with the title 'Pictures of Actors on the Stage' from 1794-5. Many have been linked together into multi-sheet compositions, but precise roles are sometimes, as here, unclear. (Label copy, TTC 1995)
The inscription in the lower right contains one error: Komazo III was the son of Koshiro IV, not of Koshiro III (P. Griffith 8/2012).
