Description
Colour woodblock print, oban. The scene in front of the 'torii' gateway of the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura from the 'Prologue' (Daijo) of the play 'Kanadehon Chushingura' by Takeda Izumo II, Miyoshi Shoraku and Namiki Senryu. From the right, Enya's wife Kaoyo Gozen tries to hold back the daimyo Momonoi Wakasanosuke as he lurches forward, about to draw his sword and attack; Lord Enya Hangan also tries to stop him while the Lord of Musashi, Ko no Moronao, laughing, calmly walks off. In the background we see the open umbrella that shades the shogun's representative Ashikaga Tadayoshi as he and other daimyo make their procession away from the shrine. The first design, called 'The Prologue (Daijo) from the series 'Chushingura, the complete twelve acts, (Chushingura junidan zukushi).
