- Curator's comments
Traditionally identified as a self-portrait of the artist, painting an ink-landscape on the free-standing screen (tsuitate). The woman standing is Ohisa of the Takashima rice-cake shop, and the woman kneeling looks to be a Yoshiwara courtesan. (Label copy, TTC 2001)
Asano and Clark 1995
A series which parodies in contemporary fashion the four pursuits of the traditional Chinese scholar-gentleman: playing the 'koto', playing the board game go, practicing calligraphy and painting (kin ki sho ga). All four designs are known. Each has a single male figure grouped with two or three female figures, and a ‘kyoka’ poem is included in each print.
The present design shows a painter executing an ink landscape on a standing screen, watched by two women and a girl. The ‘kyoka’ poem reads: "Get rid of it quickly —/Rubbing out the lines/Of the charcoal drawing absolutely/No need to tell/Anyone else. Itaya no Tsunenori.
