The kabuki actors (from right) Kawarasaki Gonjuro I as Yaegaki Monzo, wielding a sword above and grasping one end of a scroll, Sawamura Tossho II as Kageyama Hannojo, also with sword, grasping the other end of the scroll, both fighting (tachimawari) as they balance on a giant statue of Jizo, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as the thief Oniazami Seikichi standing behind. A picture showing the first two actors rising on the central stage lift, in the play ‘Kosode Soga azami no ironui’ (小袖曽我薊色縫, also called ‘Sato moyo azami no ironui’ 花街模様薊色縫, commonly known as ‘Izayoi Seishin’ 十六夜清心) by Kawatake Mokuami, performed at the Ichimura-za from the 5th of the 2nd month, 1859 (Ansei 6).

- Curator's comments
- The first performance of this play. Of the several lifts built into a traditional Kabuki stage, the largest at the back can lift entire sets into view from below. There are two separate scenes depicted in this design, with the ‘tachimawari’ fight scene between Monzo and Hannojo replacing the previous scene of the thief Seishichi. (P.Griffith 2013.)
