Elegant calligraphy in the courtly Shoren-in style by Sayama Chikayuki appears above sensitive portraits by Shunsho of the well-known 'one hundred poets' of the classical anthologies. (Label copy, TTC 1997)

This is a version of the anthology of 'Hyakunin Isshu' ('One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets'), originally collected in the thirteenth century. The 'Brocade' of the title refers to the newly popular full-colour prints known as 'nishikie' and the 'Eastern Weave' refers to the style of Edo (Tokyo), the 'Eastern capital'. The introductory pages are in pure 'Ukiyoe' style.
