Clark 1992
A courtesan, accompanied by her 'kamuro', stands on a verandah, pulling up her skirts slightly at the front, perhaps preparing to put on the clogs now lying on the ground. She wears a purple 'uchikake' with a design of flowering 'kohone' plants beside a stream, over a red kimono with a pattern of plovers and waves. The large face, tilted forward and outlined in red (as always in Moromasa's paintings), has the characteristic long nose, downturned mouth and hair combed directly back from the forehead that are the hallmarks of his idiosyncratic style. The composition of a courtesan and attendant(s) standing or seated on the corner of the verandah of a house of pleasure is common in Moromasa's small 'oeuvre'; compare, for instance, Ota 1985, no. 14, and Ithaca 1966, no. 16.

Ithaca, White Art Museum, Cornell University. ‘Japanese Painters of the Floating World.’ Exh. cat., 1966, no. 16)。
