- Curator's comments
- A note written in pencil on the print says it was acquired at Mt Kōya in December 1879. Fudō Myōō is a wrathful manifestation of the cosmic Buddha Dainichi, who brings people to the truth with the aid of his rope and sword. He is portrayed through the Sanskrit letters Kan-Man (the final two syllables of the Fudō mantra). The name “Kūkai” and his seal are on the right.
